on greatgrandmaR's travel map.
Feb 12th - I went over to Sigsbee by myself to do internet. After I finished, we contacted Jack and Mary and went over to see their RV and
meet their dog.

For dinner, we went out to Stock Island (again in search of the Rusty Anchor which we never found until 2014) and went to Oceanside Marina. Then we ate at Hickory House which is just outside the marina.

I had a jerk shrimp salad with sourdough bread, and Bob had a half rack of ribs appetizer. Before tip $28.92. They had seating outside with the big palm tree heaters, but we ate inside.

There was a jazz ensemble playing, and some people danced on the dance floor.
Feb 13th, we packed up and dropped the key through the box (Sunday and the office not open), went to Sigsbee to do email. The computer
started to download virus definitions or updates so it took me longer than it should have. We drove out as far as Bahia Honda,
Old highway on top railroad from current highway in 2002
and we went there for the first time ever ($6 entry fee for car and two people). Bahia Honda State Park is at MM 37. There are 80 camp sites available and they can be reserved in advance. Bahai Honda is noted for a very nice beach area and for snorkeling. There are equipment rentals for boats, dive and snorkel gear, fishing rods, kayaks, bicycles, and even beach chairs. But we have never been - our boat is too big for the marina and we aren't really beach people.

but when we got there, we had taken the wrong branch of the trail and were down under the bridge instead of on top of it.
Caution Dangers Currents - No Swimming Beyond This Point
The tides on the Gulf side are on a different schedule than the ones on the Atlantic Ocean side. This means that the gaps in the islands between the two sides will have considerable current as the tides and currents equalize. The current under the bridge can be as much as 2.5 knots which is a little less than 3 mph. Michael Phelps can swim about twice that fast, but most of us would be carried away by this current. So swimming is prohibited in the area of the bridge. The different current speeds are also important for some boats. Most medium or large size power boats will have no difficulty with this current but a rowboat or a dinghy would have more difficulty and so would some sailboats. A boat with a maximum speed of 6 knots would be advised to pass under the bridge at slack current.

We walked back to where the car was parked, but I detoured into the area where the marina is (not much room for bigger boats as the controlling depth is only 3.5 feet).
Dockmaster, Dive Shop and Snack Bar
I'd also seen a sign there which had information on rare plants found only in Bahia Honda.

Bob thought he'd meet me on the road, so he drove out of the parking lot and down the road as I came around the corner, which meant I had to walk all the way around and to the parking lot where he had now parked. I was annoyed, and he was annoyed that I was annoyed. We walked out to the old bridge, and I took some pictures.

When they build the Bahia Honda Bridge, it was even more of an engineering problem than the Seven Mile Bridge because of the depth of the channel and the current. So this bridge was a swing bridge with the typical erector set construction, and high because of the possibility of tidal surge through the channel. It had to cross water thirty feet deep. Steel spans, resting on concrete piers, supported the railway bed of the 5,055 foot (1.541 m) long bridge. There is a picture of the railroad bridge from the railroad tracks on this sign

Sign on the end of the bridge
When it was converted to a highway bridge, therefore, they couldn't just stick the sides of the highway over the side like they did for 7 mile bridge because the girders were in the way. SO.... They put the new highway on TOP of the old railroad bridge. The sign on the end of the old bridge says: "Old Bahia Honda Bridge. This bridge spanning the 5055 foot Bahia Honda Channel was constructed over the old East Coast Railway which was built by oil mogul Henry Flagler. Sometimes called Flagler's Folly the railway was started in 1905 and completed in 1912."
If you were driving on it back then, you totally didn't know that the highway was up there on top of the girders - at least we didn't.

It was really too much for me to eat. I wanted a root beer float, but they were out of ice cream. Bob thought that they should have just sent someone out to get some. Traffic was pretty bad at the top end of the Keys,

3 minutes to passing zone
but we were at our daughter's before 3 pm.
Feb 14th - I had several objectives to accomplish in Miami. I wanted to see our granddaughter play baseball, I wanted to send the excess luggage home, I wanted to trade in my phone and get one that would hold a charge, and I wanted to get walking shoes. So we did almost all of
that on the 14th.
Bob and granddaughter
I unpacked everything I had left here and consolidated it into one 69 lb. box, and we took it to Mailboxes etc, and sent it to our oldest daughter. Cost about $50. Then we went to the phone store which was in the same shopping center, and I got a new Verizon phone which was almost the same style as the old one. I made the mistake of erasing all the old numbers out of my old phone thinking they would take it in trade, but they did not. That meant that I had to look in my address book to get all the phone numbers to program them into the new phone. I took only the minimum number of minutes and that means that unless I call on weekends or after 9 pm I have to watch how long I talk.

Then we went to JC Pennys, and I got a nice pair of light tan pants -cotton and very comfortable, and a pair of lace up shoes. We ate lunch at Applebees - I had
Tortilla Soup
Apple chimicheesecake
and Bob had a half chicken salad again.

Then we went to KMart and I got a pair of velcro sneakers on sale.
In the evening after dinner (our daughter got rotisserie chicken) we saw a baseball game of our grandson's, which they won. He could only pitch two innings because he is limited to 10 innings per week,
Grandson pitching
Granddaughter in pink cowboy boots petting a dog
and they'd already had two games where he pitched 4 innings. The rest of the time he was catcher. He had a good hit - almost out of the park, and also turned a double play at 2nd.
Feb 15th, Our daughter took Ted to be fixed, and we went to our granddaughter's game which was in the afternoon after school.

She got onto base each time, and they won by a big margin.

She's the only girl, and she looked really cute with her hair in two pigtails but the boys on the other team gave her a lot of strange looks.

Our son-in-law bought a pop-up camper which we watched while he unpacked it. They are going camping down to Stock Island this weekend.
